Paying rent

From joining your landlord's property to paying every rent on time — and saving towards the next one.

Tenants

Joining your tenancy

Still looking for a place? Start with Finding a home. An accepted offer on HouzRent Homes creates your tenancy with the agreed terms.

Your landlord sets up the tenancy on HouzRent — the property, rent, caution fee and dates. They'll bring you in one of two ways:

  • An invite link sent to you by email or shared on WhatsApp. Open it, sign up or log in, and the tenancy is added to your account. Invite links expire after 7 days — ask your landlord for a new one if yours has.
  • Directly, if you already have a HouzRent account — your landlord finds you by your email address.
💡
Is your landlord not on HouzRent at all? You can still pay through HouzRent — see Landlord not on HouzRent?

Signing your rental agreement

  1. Open Rental AgreementRead it through — it includes the property, rent, caution fee, dates and your landlord's terms.
  2. Sign with your full nameType your name, tick to agree, and sign. The time of signing is recorded with the agreement.
  3. Download it any timeYour signed agreement stays in your account as proof of tenancy.

Your first payment

Once you've signed, your tenancy is waiting for its first payment. This payment covers your first rent and your caution fee together:

  • The rent goes to your landlord's wallet immediately.
  • The caution fee goes into escrow, where neither you nor your landlord can touch it until the tenancy ends. See Caution fees & escrow.

Top up your wallet with at least the total shown, then tap Pay. Your tenancy becomes active straight away.

Paying rent after that

Tap Pay Rent, check the amount and the period it covers, and pay from your wallet. You can pay part of your rent — it's recorded as a partial payment and the outstanding balance is shown on your Payments tab.

If you pay your landlord outside HouzRent (for example by bank transfer), your landlord can record it for you, so your payment history stays complete.

Due dates & reminders

Your next due date is shown on your dashboard. It's worked out from the last period you paid for. We'll email you:

We'll also let you and your landlord know as the end of your tenancy approaches, so you can plan to renew or move.

Rent Pot

Rent Pot helps you save towards your next rent a little at a time, so the due date never catches you short.

  1. Create a potGive it a name, a target (usually your rent) and an optional target date.
  2. Add money whenever you canMove money from your wallet into the pot. Your progress shows on your dashboard.
  3. Redeem it when it's fullOnce you reach your target, redeem the pot — the money moves back to your wallet, ready to pay rent.
ℹ️
Money in a Rent Pot is set aside for rent. You can redeem it once the pot is full and you have an active tenancy.
